Yokosawa
We live in an area within the Aoi-Ward of Shizuoka city called Yokosawa. Although is belongs within Shizuoka City boundaries, it is about 50 minutes by car from downtown and populated by a mere 24 Families.
In December 2007, Words about a major corporation based in Eastern Japan attempting to purchase a large parcel of land in the Yokosawa area began to circulate amongst the villagers. The reason behind the purchase was so that the corporation could build a large scale industrial waste site in the area. The proposed area was located beside a mountain creek that acts as a water source for not only the villagers of Yokosawa, but some communities downstream as well. Naturally the proposal was strongly opposed by the Villagers.
As a response, the villagers started a petition opposing the sale of the land. This attracted attention from the media, and the issue was featured on the nightly new shortly after the delivery of the petition to the city hall.
After that, it seemed the corporation lost interest in the area.
